A pick for the Pack

Decisions, decisions, decisions....

General Manager Ted Thompson can go in any number of directions tonight with his first round pick, the 32nd and final choice in round one of the NFL draft.  Assuming there will at some point in time, be free agency this summer, it's more than plausible to see players like Cullen Jenkins, Daryn Colledge and James Jones depart for greener ($$$) pastures.  That will create holes in the roster but right now, that remains an unknown.  Thompson has a young, deep and still experienced roster so expecting a player to come in and make an immediate impact isn't a priority.   An outside linebacker opposite Clay Matthews makes some sense but the defense did get production from the likes of Erik Walden, (three sacks in the regular season finale against the Bears) and Frank Zombo, (a Super Bowl sack).  Granted they are not huge impact players but outside of Von Miller of Texas A & M, there might not be one out there.   Akeem Ayers of UCLA and Brooks Reed of Arizona would be an upgrade and possible choices at 32.   On the defensive line, Cameron Heyward of Ohio State or Muhammed Wilkerson of Temple can both handle the five technique position.  Thompson generally favors big school programs with his top picks, giving Heyward a slight edge if available.  What if Alabama's Heisman winner Mark Ingram is available?  A wide receiver should be added to the mix but after Julio Jones and AJ Green, the Pack should be able to find value in rounds 2 or 3.  Torrey Smith of Maryland is ultra fast with return ability and Randall Cobb of Kentucky is a sure handed route runner.  A left tackle of the future and a left guard for the present will be debated but the top five tackles might all be gone, Derrek Sherrod of Mississippi State might slide to the end of the round.  I really like Danny Watkins, the 26 year old fireman with a mean streak from Baylor.  If there, he's my choice, rating him more pro ready than the host of other possibilities after 31 names are called.  Check out our live coverage from Lambeau tonight and through the weekend.   Let's start picking.
