                                  precious

After all of the hype about this movie at the Academy Awards I figured I had to see the movie.  So I ordered it off of Time Warner On Demand and spent my Wednesday foggy afternoon watching a story about a girl named Precious.  I am still kind of undecided about this movie.  It is a really good story, but it didn't tear at my heart strings like I wanted it to.  (I feel more emotionally connected to the girls on MTV's 16 and Pregnant than I did to this girl).

The movie is about a an overweight African American girl who has been abused her entire life.  She is molested by her mother and father, which results in two pregnancies.  She gets kicked out of school and is sent to an alternative school.  This is where she meets a teacher who helps her turn her life around.  She is able to keep her child, and leave her abusive mother.  I won't tell you the rest but there is definitely some shockers at the end of the movie.  I think the reason I still am not sure how I feel about it because it is truly a depressing movie.  There is no other way to describe it.  I didn't feel good when the movie ended- I actually thought wow, her life sucks and just when you think it isn't going to suck any more, it does.  I think this is one of those movies where you have to come to your own conclusion, but I do think it is one that if you are even the slightest bit interested you will have to see it to fulfill your curiosity!  It is full of great actors who weren't allowed to wear makeup in the entire movie.  MoNique did an amazing job as the horrendous mother, and if you look closely you will see Sherry Shephard and Mariah Carey in supporting roles.
