Producers of "American Idol" really wanted Katy Perry as a judge, but the pop star turned down their $20 million offer.
The one-year contract would have made Perry that highest paid judge on any music competition show. That title now goes to Mariah Carey who makes $18 million for "American Idol."
In other "Idol" news, Nicki Minaj is getting ready to sign a deal as a judge for Season 12. Also, country star Keith Urban is closing in on a deal of his own to join the panel.
Nicki and Keith have been in talks for weeks with Idol producers. Idol wanted Nicki but her Pepsi sponsorship created issues with Idol sponsor Coke. But the issues got worked out and Nicki will get around $8 million to join the show, with extra cash for wardrobe, hair and makeup.
Keith Urban confirmed he was in talks to join the show, and has agreed to take a third seat for a salary of $3 to $4 million.
