May the Schwartz be with you!

by Mark Daniels

Here come the schizophrenic Detroit Lions under bombastic head coach Jim Schwartz.  Hired after the infamous 0-16 season in 2008, the former Tennessee Titans defensive assistant went 2-14 his first year with the Lions but by 2011, had the club challenging the Packers by making the playoffs at 10-6. Last year, they fell apart to 4-12 and now in 2013, Schwartz and the Lions have opened the season by winning three of their first four games to share the early NFC North lead with the Bears, a team they beat pretty soundly 40-32 last Sunday.  Schwartz is a temperamental sort on the field, remember the post-game dust up with Jim Harbaugh of the 49ers?  His teams have had a bad habit of silly rough stuff too, just ask Evan Dietrich-Smith.  But outside the lines, Schwartz is a thoughtful, sometimes engaging interview.   I had a chance to visit with him via a conference call this morning to talk about Sunday's upcoming showdown with the Packers, at a place Detroit has not won since 1991, and how his team has roared out of the gate heading into this week's trip to Lambeau Field.

As for the Packers, they get back on the practice field today and check back for a post on the latest injury news and more.
